7 Tips for Traveling Successfully with Your Pet

Many people choose to travel with their pets everyday.  Some like to bring them on all of their family vacations.  Others have to bring them along on business trips since they don’t have anyone else to care for them.  No matter what your reasoning is for traveling with your pet, it doesn’t have to be a nightmare.  In fact, if you follow the tips below, you can make sure that both you and you pet enjoy the experience of traveling together.

  1. Know the regulations for pets.  Before you take your pet anywhere with you, you need to be aware of any and all restrictions for your pet.  If you’re flying, you should check with the airline you’re using.  The same goes for any other transportation.  Don’t just assume you know the regulations.  Always check before you go.

  1. Try to get a non stop flight.  If you’re flying with your pet, it’s always a good idea to try and get a non stop flight if possible.  This will reduce the stress your pet has to go through being taken on and off planes.  It will also reduce the chances of your pet being put on the wrong plane and not arriving with you.

  1. Make your pet comfortable.  Traveling for pets can be stressful.  To help calm their nerves, you should try to make them as comfortable as possible.  Put a soft blanket in their carrier with a few of their favorite toys.  You might also consider putting an item in with them that has your scent on it.  This can help comfort them.

  1. Don’t give your pet food right before you travel.  Pets can get car and plane sick just like humans.  To avoid a big mess, you shouldn’t give your pet any food a couple of hours before you plan to travel.  If this isn’t possible, you might ask your vet what else you can do for your pet to help them avoid any travel sickness.

  1. Keep pets safe in the car with a crate or seatbelt.  Even though you may not want to keep your pet in a crate when you’re driving, it’s really for their best safety.  This keeps them from interfering with your driving and keeps them safe during any accidents.  If you don’t want to put your pet in a crate, they do make pet restraints for cars.

  1. Make sure your accommodations will accept pets.  Before you leave on your trip, you need to call ahead to the place you’re staying at and make sure they accept pets.  You should also find out about any fees and restrictions they have for pets.  This will help you avoid any unexpected surprises on your trip.

  1. Give your pet plenty of breaks to move around.  If you’re traveling in a car with your pet, you should make sure to take plenty of breaks.  This will allow both of you to move around and stretch your legs.  This will also allow your pet to go to the bathroom and get some water or food if they need it.

These tips will make sure traveling with your pets will be as easy as possible.  Remember that your pet’s safety on an airplane or in the car is the number one priority.  It’s also important to understand any pet restrictions you will have while traveling.  This will help you avoid many unnecessary headaches during your trip and make sure that everything goes smoothly for you.
